Old Man Emu offers a range of tuned and matched integrated suspension systems to ensure the right suspension is available to suit how the vehicle is outfitted and the conditions it will encounter.

An early opportunity for improvement was identified in leaf spring design when encountering small to medium bumps/obstacles. Ride behavior was sharp and abrupt. When fitting accessories and load for expedition travel, the Old Man Emu suspension system addresses ride height and enhances control performance with a range of springs and matched dampers.

Old Man Emu’s newly developed range will provide a plush ride over both on- and off-road slow speed features, but still provide vehicle stability when a high-speed maneuver is required. In order to accommodate vehicles with various loads, Old Man Emu has developed a spectrum of strut and spring combinations to provide the best load-carrying ride-comfort combination possible.

For optimal ride performance, always fit Old Man Emu as a complete suspension system. There is an opportunity to fit front coils, struts, and rear shock absorbers as levelling kit. However, always fit a complete system whenever possible to ensure optimal load-carrying capacity and ride control.

Front Suspension:

Springs:
Factory geometry allowed for a 60mm lift and still maintain an adequate level of droop. Two spring
options were designed to cater for No Accessories, Bumper and Bumper/Winch vehicle setups. For bumper-only applications, a trim packer is required.

Trim packer:
A 5mm trim packer is available to assist with fine tuning of ride heights and is recommended for Baronly fitment to achieve target lift.

Struts:
An extensive development and tuning project was undertaken to correctly match the ride quality to the spring rate and resulted in a new front-strut option. The newly tuned strut resulted in a compliant yet controlled ride with particular improvement in isolation of small inputs and road texture, as well as larger inputs from various road profiles, potholes, and road features.

Rear Suspension:

Springs:
Extensive development has gone into the new US Ranger leaf spring design. While the leaf springs from the global Ford Ranger platform fit this application, they didn’t provide the desired lift and ride characteristics. As such, two new leaf springs were developed for this application. A third option is available for heavily-loaded applications.

Stock loads (0lbs to GVM, optimal performance at loads of 0-600lbs):
Intermediate Load, constant 600lb (600lbs to GVM, optimal performance at loads of 600lbs to 1200lbs) Heavy Load, constant 1200lbs (1200 lbs to GVM, optimal performance at loads of 1200 lbs plus An optional XL (extra leaf) was developed to cater for potential expedition vehicle setups that would have a heavy constant load.

Shock Absorbers:
Two new rear shock absorbers have been developed with particular attention to controlling the vehicle both with and without payloads. Numerous iterations of valving were tested in order to determine the best possible spring and shock absorber combination based on potential payload scenarios. As a result, the best possible configuration of ride comfort and vehicle control was achieved.

Rear Suspension Hardware:
Leaf spring bushes are available as kit part number OMESB117 or OMESB118 depending on whether Greasable Shackles are being fitted. Along with the Greasable Shackle kit, a front Greasable Pin (OMEGP10) is now available making servicing requirements easier. Additional U-bolts specific to the U.S. Ranger were developed and are required for fitment.
